PSA: You Can’t move the origin of a generic annotation symbol.

Just a quick knowledge share about a quirk I just discovered in Revit that I thought I’d share.

Did you know that you can’t actually change the origin point of a Generic Annotation family? For example, if you wanted to change the origin reference plane of a Generic Annotation nested into a parent family so that you can constrain it at the end instead of the center of the symbol. This plagued my wall-mounted fire alarm families because when we would change scale, the annotation wouldn’t appear to be on the wall the device was hosted on.

You can’t move the Reference Planes to move the origin.

Solution

You need to move the linework within the symbol instead because the Generic Annotation family has an internal 0,0 origin that cannot be moved.
